At the bare minimum, you will need a tent, sleeping bags, and some basic cooking equipment. Modern tents are waterproof and easy to set up, and just a thin roof of nylon gives you that reassuring feeling of “shelter” at night. Choose a tent based on the weather you expect, the type of activity and the number of
people. Tents can range from light backpacker's bivy sacks to large 6-person "basecamping" tents. You’ll find they are rated either as "3-season" (not winter) tents or as sturdy "4-season" tents which can stand up to high winds and heavy snow loads. Department store tents tend to be cheap and mass produced so if you plan to incorporate camping into your active lifestyle, get a quality tent that will last for years.

You’ll want to be snug so consider purchasing the best sleeping bag you can afford. Sleeping bags are made of down or synthetic materials rated for night time temperatures: Cold weather (+10 to -0 deg.); 3-seasons (+15 to 32 deg.); and warm weather (+35 deg.). Tuck into one that’s warm, lightweight and compressible, and has a hood, and you’ll think you’re ready for nights on Kilimanjaro. Since you won’t want to be lying on hard ground, be sure to pick up an air mattress or pad while you’re shopping for gear.
