A variety of egg products are available to consumers today. These products include refrigerated liquid, frozen, dried and specialty egg products. Many of these egg products are comparable to shelled eggs when it comes to flavor and nutritional value—at least when compared statistically.

For example, products like “egg beaters” are made from real eggs, but contain only egg whites. Vitamins and minerals are added to the product to replace those lost when the egg’s yolk is removed. The supplemental vitamins and minerals added are most likely not as powerful or effective as whole nutrition found in natural foods. And, especially if the added vitamins are synthetic products, it’s important to understand that the health benefits then are not the same as consuming a natural, organic egg. Some egg beater products offer a lower fat, calorie and cholesterol content compared with traditional eggs, which appeals to some consumers. But more often than not, when a natural product is changed in these ways, some of its natural nutrient and health power is lost. When considering using such substitute products, be sure to read product labels very carefully and don’t hesitate to call the manufacturing company to ask them specifics. And always check with your primary care physician before making significant changes to your diet.
