The calf muscles are a combination of three muscle groups: the gastrocnemius muscles, the soleus muscles, and the tibialis anticus muscle. Each muscle operates in conjunction with the others, but each muscle affects the appearance of the leg in a different way.

    •   The gastrocnemius is the muscle that we tend to think of as the main calf muscle. The most visible muscle, it gives the calf the strong, inverted heart shape to the back of the leg. It’s the muscle that tends to take on the “ripped” appearance.

    •   The soleus muscle is equally important but frequently overlooked. It runs under the gastrocnemius and is responsible for creating the look of length and strength on the leg.

    •   The Tibialis Anticus muscle is attached to the front of your leg. As the name implies, it’s attached to the tibia. This muscle, when viewed from the front, makes a nice curve or gives a rounded quality to the area around the bone.
