What to Look For in Quality and Price in a Snowboard

There are three main areas to consider in a well-made board: its weight, stiffness and vibration control. A lightweight board is easier to handle and makes the lift ride a lot more pleasant. Since lightness is a primary goal of higher-end boards, price goes up significantly. Designers add more torsional stiffness (how stiff a board is as it twists) in expensive boards to increase the ability to carve with speed. And finally, most middle and high-end boards have some form of vibration damping (chatter) when cruising at speed or over crud.

Entry level boards ($225 and up) tend to be a little heavier and are designed for less aggressive riders. Mid-range boards ($350 and up) and top-of-the-line models ($425 and up) will be lighter and have some of the extra features listed above. You should try out demo boards and bindings at resorts during promotional days since you can’t tell how a board will respond just by looking at it. Strap it on and take it for a ride.
