The puzzle above has 27 givens. Notice that the number 8 appears in seven of the nine rows, columns and regions, which means two more 8s are needed. In the first region, the answer is obvious: since 8 appears in columns one & two, and also in row one, that eliminates the cells in those columns/rows. The number 7 is a given (in row two, third column), which means the only solution for the number 8 in the first block is in the third row, third column (represented here by a shaded box).

Now the puzzle needs to solve one more 8 to be entered in the top-right corner region. If you look at the two regions directly below it, you’ll see the 8 appears in two columns and by following the columns up, you can mentally eliminate those four empty cells in the region. Now look at the rows across. The first row and third rows contain an 8 in the first and second region. By eliminating what won’t work, you are left with only one cell that will work. In the third sub-grid, second row, last column, you would enter an 8 (also represented by a shaded box).
