Tennis: How the Pros Play

Burning up to 500 calories an hour sounds good; doing it while challenging and improving the body and mind sounds better. Tennis is an addictive sport, but it’s also a demanding one that
requires complete mental and physical devotion, as well as education in choosing the racket, ball, and strings that fits you and your court – whether you’re a beginner or aiming to go professional.


Types of Courts

The 78-foot long and 27-foot wide (36-foot wide in the case of doubles) tennis court plays a more critical role in your game than you might know. Each of the three major types of courts - hard courts (made of concrete or asphalt and coated with paint mixed with sand or grit), clay courts (made of clay and covered with gravel), and grass courts (made of tightly-packed grass) - impacts the ball in a different way. When a ball hits a hard court, it bounces low and skids away quickly. The skid is faster on a grass court. However, when a ball hits a clay court, it loses speed as it bounces back up high. This is why hard courts and grass courts are considered fast, and clay courts are considered slow.
