The Major Strokes

Good strings are crucial for the execution of the five major tennis strokes: the groundstrokes, volley, lob, overhead, and serve. The groundstrokes (the forehand and backhand) are used to return a ball that has bounced off the ground. To return a ball that is close to the net and that has not bounced off the ground, you use the volley. If you want to deliver the ball above and beyond your opponent’s head, you use the lob. While success in tennis depends on perfecting all the strokes, the most important stroke is the serve.

There is no single correct way to serve. For a good serve, fully extend the arm holding the racket upwards. Professional players usually rotate their shoulders far back externally away from the court. Amateurs need practice until they can do that during the serve.
