First, let’s take the mystery out of kayaks. Simply put: they’re little boats, the cooler cousin of the canoe. So what’s the difference? While a canoe is an open boat, a kayak is a closed-in boat that has a canopy stretched across the top deck, and the paddler sits in a cockpit while covered by a spray skirt, a piece of material that seals the craft and keeps water out. The last difference between the two is that a canoeist uses a single-bladed paddle, while the kayaker uses a double-bladed paddle to maneuver quickly and easily.
