Kayaking is a Safe Sport, but Be Prepared

Knowing your abilities on the water and how to avoid trouble can make kayaking a lot more fun. Whitewater and sea kayaking have obvious safety concerns as far as currents and weather conditions go, but even paddling across a lake in a boat by yourself can be a nerve-wracking challenge if it’s outside your comfort zone. Always stay within your limits until you gain confidence and experience. At a minimum, you’ll need to add these safety items to your gear:

- Always wear a personal floatation device, or life jacket, even if you’re a good swimmer. Anything can happen on the water.

- If you’re in an open kayak (one without watertight hatches) you must have float bags stowed fore and aft to keep the boat from sinking if you overturn and have to make a wet exit.
